![]() ![]() ![]() My best book is my Recollections of Joan of Arc. You shouldn’t read those books about bad boys! Why, the librarians won’t allow them in the children’s rooms in the libraries! Now don’t you go and imitate those rascals Tom and Huck. He said he had never seen Twain so cross. One day he got a chance to tell Twain how much he had enjoyed Tom and Huck. Twain lived in Taylor’s neighborhood when Taylor was a boy. The others needed no preparation and got none.Ī man named Coley Taylor told a story about what Twain said to him about Joan. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. I like Joan of Arc best of all my books, and it is the best I know it perfectly well. This book is such a departure from what we expect from him that he had it published anonymously so readers would judge the book without prejudice. This month we read Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. So they have had a good taste of Mark Twain’s usual style. ![]() This is part of Diane’s Literature Course II SeriesĮach of the girls in my class has read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and last year we read Life on the Mississippi together. ![]() ![]() Lots of BTS kind of stuff of the making of the show. It got darker, though, and the blue tent faded into the night. I sighed, but stood there, watching even though there was nothing to see. Was the blue tent moving, or was it only the fire playing on the smooth hide? A long, slender arm suddenly shot out and pulled the hide fully across the entrance. I passed quietly behind the Chieftains’ Tent and paused to look round the edge, down the hill. So I was looking for a “jacks” ending to a brief scene, and found this one. But there is another kind, that I call “jacks”-in which you scatter a number of small, shiny objects around and cause the reader to want to pick them up. ![]() Basically (I think), that kind of temporary ending is usually either a cliff-hanger type (even a tiny cliff-hanger will do), or a “resting” ending-where Things have been Happening, and you want everyone to be able to stop for a moment and breathe. Time and time again, a question has been asked about ‘ If I Stay,’ a question the author gives a simple answer to, was ‘If I stay’ based on actual events? While Gayle Forman states the book is fictional, inspired by a tragedy, it is difficult to conclude that ‘If I Stay’ is a fictional book. Though ‘If I Stay’ was published in 2009, the novel’s ability to give a nearly perfect definition of pain from a young adult’s perspective is something that makes the book exceptional. Pain also defined the emotions of everyone around Mia, from her grandmother to her grandfather, her best friend Kim, her extended family, and Adam. ![]() Gayle Forman’s use of the first perspective gave the book a much more realistic tone as it gave Mia a sense of existence in the real world.
